Prom night. It’s a big deal for most teens and everyone wants to look and feel their best on this special night.
Striking the perfect balance between glamming it up and feeling good can be tricky. For many teens – especially those who aren’t used to wearing makeup – it can feel like your look has taken a turn for the worst at the most inopportune moment!
If you’re looking to go the professional route, Pure Spa is the place to go. Our talented makeup artists listen to what you want – whether you’re looking for majorly glam or totally natural, we’ve got you covered!
However, if you want to do your own prom makeup, here are five must-remember tips to ensure your prom look stays true to you!
1. Go Easy On The Bronzer!

Subtle highlights and a hint of bronze create a natural, glowing look
We’ve all seen the tutorials on how to mimic Kim K, but unless you’re shooting an editorial for Vogue, there’s no need for all those harsh lines. You want to accentuate your features, not look like a color-by-numbers page!
Start with your highlighter. You want to apply where light will naturally hit, so cheekbones, browbones, the bridge and tip of the nose, and above your cupid’s bow should get a touch of highlighter.
When contouring, think ‘3’. Draw the shape of the number 3 on your face, starting at your hairline, then tracing from the top of the ear moving to the hollow of the cheeks and finishing at the jaw line. Finish with two lines on either side of the nose.
Next, break out your buffing brush (densely packed bristles cut at an even length) and blend away! You want to blend up and out to achieve that natural, sculpted look.
2. Don’t Skimp On The Lip!
Whether you’re opting for bold or natural, lip color is a must. To achieve a long-lasting look, start with lining and filling in the lip with a color, this will help ensure your pout stays perfect all night. Next, fill in the lips with the color of your choice.
When it comes to lipstick, matte options last the longest. However, they can make your lips feel dry, so be sure to keep your lips hydrated throughout the evening. You can always apply some gloss for a more glam look!
To achieve a more natural look, select a color that is one or two shades darker than your natural lip color. For bolder looks, stick with what works with your undertones. Yellow undertones match better with warmer shades, while pink undertones pair well with colors that have a hint of blue or purple to them.
3. Blend, Blend, Blend!
The number one mistake you can make when applying your makeup is forgetting to blend. This scenario leads to the unsightly chin strap that occurs from not applying makeup all the way down the neck and chest.
This is where that buffing brush I mentioned before comes in handy. Be sure to blend in all harsh lines along your jawbone, down your neck, and over your collarbone. This will create a fluid, natural look to your foundation.
4. Blush Is A Must!

Follow these tips to look your best on prom night!
Blush can sometimes seem dated when applied wrong, which is why so many people opt out of applying it nowadays.
However, without a touch of blush, the face can appear washed out or even sickly. When done right, blush can really give the skin a gorgeous, healthy glow!
Steer clear of the morbid look and dab some rouge on the apples of your cheeks. Avoid brushing on prominent circles over your cheeks; that’s a HUGE blush no-no!
Instead, focus on sweeping blush up from the apples, following the natural line of the bone. If you feel like you may have added too much, step away from the hand-held mirror and take a look from a few feet back. You’ll be surprised by how little you really have on.
5. Don’t Forget The Brows!
Eyebrows are often overlooked, which can lead to a look that appears unfinished. Your brows frame your face; regardless of your preferred brow shape or size, they need to be attended to.
Begin by tracing the bottom of your eyebrow, either with a pencil or powder, to set your shape. The ideal end of the brow is at a 45-degree angle from the outside end of the eye.
Next, begin to fill in any sparse areas by using short, dash-like strokes. Brush brow hair using a spoolie brush to blend and eliminate any harsh lines.
Seem like too much to remember? Don’t stress yourself out! If you want to relax on prom day, leave your look to the experts at Pure Spa. We’ll ensure you look and feel your very best!
